Remarks and occurences on a tour from Minorca to Barcelona and from thence through France to England, 1802 Jun-Aug.

Holograph journal kept by Captain Strickland of the 82nd Regiment during travel from Minorca to Dover, accompanied by Captain Mandeville of the 18th Regiment and Lieutenant Webber of the Royal Artillery. The party sailed to Barcelona and then traveled overland via the Pyrenees to southern France, Geneva, Chamonix, Lyons, Paris, and finally Calais. Strickland details road conditions, scenery, fortifications, and sights visited, including Lake Geneva; Mont Blanc; and Rousseau's chateau at Chalens "where he composed most of his works." He notes "ruins" and "the ravages of the Revolution" in most French towns, particularly of churches and public buildings. Also described are an encounter with customhouse guards in the Helvetic Republic who had recently seized smuggled English goods; a tour through Fontainebleau, "totally gutted except for the Queen's small dressing room;" "the number of Englishmen going to Paris" at Calais; and their arrival at Dover, "pleased to reach old England again!." Final page in volume contains daily itinerary, headed "Names of different places where we remained any time."
